What is an estate car?
Estate cars tend to be based on hatchback or saloon models and feature an extended roof that gives them significantly more boot space. As a result, estate cars tend to be a little longer than the cars on which they are based, so may require a little extra attention when parking, but with a larger window area, they often benefit from improved all-round visibility. Many manufacturers shy away from using the estate word, so don’t be surprised if their brochures and websites employ euphemisms such as Avant, Sports Tourer, Sports Wagon and Touring – estates are what they really are.
Why should I buy an estate car?
Forget fashionable SUV owners’ claims to the contrary, estate cars are the true all-rounders. Estates offer an almost identical driving experience to their hatchback and saloon counterparts, but come with masses of extra space for luggage, family or pets, usually costing less to run than SUVs, too. As with other car types, there are also hybrid and fully electric estate cars to consider, so you can save even more on running costs while you carry your family and all their kit in comfort.
Should I buy an estate car or an SUV?
In many car buyers’ minds, SUVs have replaced estates as champions of practicality. While the boot space in most SUVs is taller than equivalent estates, overall it’s usually the latter with the more voluminous cargo space. Plus, being lower to the ground than a high-rise SUV, it’s easier both to lift very heavy objects into the boot of an estate and for pets to jump in and out.
Although they weren't sold in huge numbers, cars such as the Audi A4 Allroad, Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain and Volvo V60 Cross Country were estates that were given an SUV-like makeover, being a little taller and with additional cladding for a tougher appearance. They don't suit everyone, but are worth seeking out if that mixture of both worlds appeals to you.
