Cheapest Euro 6 diesel cars

Buy a budget emission zone-exempt car and avoid ULEZ charges: these are the cheapest Euro 6 diesel cars

If you're considering a diesel car, then it makes a lot of sense to choose one that meets the latest emissions standards, known as Euro 6. This is especially the case if you plan to commute into a busy town or city, or live near a low emission zone.

It will mean that you won't need to worry about London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which was expanded in size on 25 October 2021. Owners of non-Euro 6-compliant diesels will be charged up to £12.50 a day to drive in the city centre, on top of the £15 daily Congestion Charge - making the total £27.50.

Even if you avoid driving in London like the plague, several cities are planning clean air zones, which will also target older diesel models, including Birmingham, Derby and Newcastle.

Fortunately, it's easy to find a Euro 6 car and it needn't be expensive. Every diesel car sold since September 2015 has had to meet the emissions standard, so any vehicle that's three years old or less should comply.

In addition, several cars met the Euro 6 regulations early and we've listed them in a separate Euro 6 diesel cars article. Alternatively, you could opt for a petrol car. As long as it is less than 12 years old, it should be exempt from charges under current plans. Whatever car you're buying, it's always wise to check with the seller that the vehicle does meet the Euro 6 standard.

Cheapest used Euro 6 diesel cars

1. Dacia Sandero

With a reputation as the UK’s cheapest new car, the Sandero was always going to be a Euro 6 bargain. A diesel Sandero is more expensive than a petrol-powered one but if your mileage is higher than average or you regularly travel with a full load, it’s a price worth paying.

In any case, less than £150 per month for a lightly used diesel Sandero in decently equipped Laureate trim looks like value for money. The Renault-sourced diesel engine is smooth, reasonably powerful and capable of up to 80mpg, although 60mpg is more likely in real world conditions.

2. Citroen C3

Prices for a 2015, Euro 6-compliant Citroen C3 regularly start at under £150 per month on finance, and it's often the cheapest Euro-6 compliant car that BuyaCar sells.

At this price, you're not looking at the modern, chunky Citroen C3, with its crossover-inspired bodywork, but the earlier version of the car, with curvy lines and a good level of comfort. Supple suspension can soak up the impact of potholes effectively and space in the back is roughly equivalent to a modern Ford Fiesta. However, there's nowhere near as much technology, and the car leans far more in corners - even at fairly slow speeds. Opt for Edition or Platinum models, which have more equipment than basic VT cars.

3. Fiat 500

The little Fiat 500 is a city car at heart, at its best with a 1.2 or 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol engine. However, if you want to stretch its legs out of the city on longer trips, then the 1.3 diesel engine is an even better choice.

It’s no ball of fire, but it will cruise quietly and comfortably all day long. You can expect real-world fuel economy of around 60mpg, which is reasonable, if some way off the official figure of 83mpg. It's no longer being produced, and didn't sell in vast quantities, used examples are quite rare and prices can vary considerably.

4. Hyundai i20

Used deals Limited stock

Not a great number of Hyundai i20 new car buyers choose the diesel option, instead opting for the cheaper petrol version, but used examples can still be worth seeking out.

It's not a bad choice for the car, as it delivers power without needing to be revved hard, so feels faster than its 16-second 0-62mph acceleration figure would lead you to believe. It is noisy as you gather speed, but settles down at steady speeds, where it's also efficient. Expect around 55mpg in real-world driving.

5. Renault Clio

Used deals from £7,990
Monthly finance from £0*

Renault owns Dacia, and here you'll find the same engine as the Dacia Sandero at the top of the list, wrapping it in a more stylish and contemporary design. It’s more expensive but you can see where your money's gone, thanks to an interior that feels more upmarket than the Sandero, even if it doesn't match more modern alternatives, such as the VW Polo and Seat Ibiza, and the newest version of the Clio itself.

The performance of the Clio and Sandero is largely the same, with official fuel economy of 85mpg, which is more like 55mpg in normal, mixed driving.

6. Nissan Note

Used deals Limited stock

Nissan is another company that's linked to Dacia and Renault, so the Note uses the same diesel engine you'll find elsewhere on this page in the Sandero and Clio. It’s noisier in the Nissan than it is in the other two cars but just as strong when accelerating.

In fact, more than the other cars, the engine's pulling power feels perfect for the Note, given the fact it's an impressively roomy car easily capable of carrying five adults in comfort. The Note is no longer made, but there's usually a good choice of relatively recent models available.

7. Skoda Fabia

Used deals Limited stock

The Skoda Fabia doesn't have the smoothest or quietest small diesel engine on the market, but it is pleasingly powerful from low revs, so there’s rarely any need to strain it. Its demeanour also suits the grown-up Fabia, which feels like a bigger car to drive than it really is. It's even quite at home cruising up and down the motorway.

You can expect fuel economy of around 53mpg in real-world driving, making the engine a good partner for the value-for-money Fabia which, in SE trim, nevertheless features a digital radio, parking sensors, alloy wheels and body coloured exterior trims.

8. Vauxhall Astra

Used deals from £7,699
Monthly finance from £0*

Vauxhall put a 1.6-litre Euro 6-compliant diesel engine into the Astra from April 2014, which today gives buyers a wide range of examples to choose from. Prices for early cars are now close to £8,000, which makes it one of the cheapest Euro 6 diesel family hatchback models; ideal if you're looking for affordable transport for a few passengers, children and their luggage.

The lowest-priced cars are from the previous generation (pictured), which is a solid performer, offering comfort, quietness and stability in corners. It's also a lighter design than its predecessor, which helps it not only perform better but also save money at the pumps.
