Is a used VW T-Roc a good buy?
The sporty looking VW T-Roc is one of the best small SUVs around. It’s about the same size as a Volkswagen Golf, albeit higher-riding of course, while it rivals other small SUVs such as the similar SEAT Arona and the popular Ford Puma.
More expensive versions compete with similar upmarket small SUVs such as the Audi Q2 and MINI Countryman.
Despite the sporty looks, it’s actually a very comfortable car - whatever specification you go for - with supportive seats and soft suspension that makes for a relaxing ride.
The VW T-Roc range has been around since 2018, but the high-performance VW T-Roc R version only joined the lineup in 2019 and the unusual-looking Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet has only been around since 2020.
Whatever version you’re considering, the VWT-Roc is a comfortable, flexible, and spacious companion. And unless you’re looking for the much rarer and newer VW T-Roc R or VW T-Roc Cabriolet models, there are plenty of nearly new and used models around to choose from.
Which used VW T-Roc should you buy?
Four-wheel drive is available, but only on the more powerful petrol and diesel engines, the rest of the Volkswagen T-Roc range is two-wheel drive. Gearbox choices include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed 'DSG' automatic - though again, the automatic is only available with the more powerful engines.
What used VW T-Roc trim levels are available?
The VW T-Roc range echoes other VW model ranges with S, SE and SEL the core versions that you'll see for sale. The mid-spec SE is the most popular (no surprise there) and offers useful extra kit over the S such as parking sensors and automatic climate control.
VW T-Roc S
The entry-level VW T-Roc S is only available with the 1.0-litre 110hp petrol engine and the 115hp 2.0-litre diesel engine, so you don't have much in the way of choice here, but it’s nevertheless reasonably well equipped.
Among the highlights are 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control, lane assist, and automatic emergency braking, which also keeps an eye out for pedestrians.
VW T-Roc SE
Moving up a trim level to the SE brings larger 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding door mirrors, body-coloured bumpers and a chrome grille. Inside, there are height-adjustable front seats, plus automatic climate control to replace manual air-conditioning. It also offers adaptive cruise control, which is a useful feature on busy British motorways.
SE is by far the most popular trim level for the T-Roc, so there should be a wide range of used models on offer and you should be able to find a great deal on BuyaCar.
VW T-Roc United
VW T-Roc United models have a different style of alloy wheels to the SE, plus daytime running lights and heated front seats - other than that it’s pretty similar to SE specification.
VW T-Roc Black Edition
VW T-Roc Black Edition models get black 18-inch alloy wheels, a ‘Black Edition’ styling pack, black roof rails, and tinted windows.
VW T-Roc Design
Design specification brings a wide range of customisation options, so used models in this trim offer a lot more visual variety. Among the best features offered on the T-Roc Design are the twin trapezoidal exhaust trims, the option of a roof and door mirrors painted in a contrasting colour to the rest of the body and interior ambient lighting.
VW T-Roc SEL
Specified from new, the T-Roc SEL will cost several thousand pounds more than a Design model, but on the used market the differences in price are much more narrow - especially when it comes to PCP finance monthly payments.
For your money, you get plenty of high-tech kit, including LED headlights, front sport seats, a driver fatigue detection system, and a digital screen that replaces the conventional analogue dials - and which can be configured to show a full-width sat-nav map.
VW T-Roc R Line
R-Line models are where the T-Roc starts to get more sporty. These come with smart-looking 19-inch alloys, plus sports suspension, which gives them a firmer ride. They also get automatic range adjustment on the LED headlights, plus heated front sports seats to continue the sporty feeling on the inside.
VW T-Roc R
The T-Roc R is the performance-focused model in the T-Roc range. It uses the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine as the speedy Volkswagen Golf R - so it has a substantial 300hp and is only available with four-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
While the T-Roc R is significantly faster than the other T-Roc models, it is a little less comfortable and a lot more expensive, so it’s only worth considering if you really crave the extra power it offers.
