The Porsche Macan looks like an SUV, but it has a hint of a sports car about it - perfect for keen drivers in the market for a practical car

Following Porsche’s success with its Cayenne large SUV - a car that sold so well it was credited with saving the company in the 2000s - the brand wanted to capitalise on that success with a smaller, even more sporty SUV. The result was the Porsche Macan.

A rival for cars such as the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio, it combines Porsche’s traditional sporty driving experience with the high-riding driving position and spacious interior of an SUV, but at a lower price point than with the Porsche Cayenne.

The car was launched in 2013, with significant updates made in 2018 and further revisions in 2021. As well as styling upgrades and changes to engine specifications, fuel economy and performance, the Macan has also been subject to various media system updates throughout its life. Broadly speaking, the newer the Macan, the more sophisticated its media systems will be.

A range of six-cylinder engines were available from launch with a 3.0-litre 340hp petrol powering the S and a 3.6-litre unit powering the top-spec Turbo model with 400bhp (later upped to 440hp with a new 2.9-litre engine). From 2015, a more driver-focused GTS model was slotted in between the S and the Turbo.

The most sensible of the Macans is probably the 3.0-litre Diesel S. This offers a punchy-enough 258hp, but also the possibility of around 45mpg fuel economy with relaxed driving, but it was discontinued in 2019. The most recent addition to the range is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder entry-level model, simply badged ‘Macan’ with 245hp.

All Macans are fitted with four-wheel-drive, with power being transferred through a seven-speed 'PDK' automatic gearbox. If this sounds like the car for you, search for a used Porsche Macan on BuyaCar, with prices from £493 per month.

The trim levels you get on the Porsche Macan are dependent to a large extent on the engine option a car is fitted with. Keep reading for more information on which kit comes with the different versions.

With the ‘entry-level’ Porsche Macan only being available from the car’s update in 2018, this version gets LED headlights and rear lights, an 11-inch touchscreen media system (other models get an eight-inch system for pre-2018 cars), eight-way adjustable electric seats with Alcantara upholstery and dual-zone climate control.

Power comes from a VW-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 245hp - although models from 2021 onwards get a little extra horsepower. As a result, the basic Macan is quick, but not as sporty as the more powerful options below.

Porsche Macan S PCP offers

The Macan S is the first rung on the six-cylinder engine ladder (discounting the diesel engined version) - with this type of engine offering a more sporty engine note than the smaller unit in the entry-level Macan. As such, it gets a few styling tweaks to differentiate it from the most basic models (the diesel and the four-cylinder petrol Macan) though these vary depending on how old the car you’re looking at is.

Power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 340hp. This provides plenty of punch, making the Macan S notably quicker and more sporty in feel than the Macan and the less powerful diesel version.

Porsche Macan Diesel S PCP offers

With a 258hp six-cylinder diesel engine capable of 44mpg fuel economy, the Macan Diesel S offers impressively low running costs without losing out too much in terms of outright performance compared with the Macan S above.

While diesel engines traditionally prioritise fuel economy over performance, this strong engine suits the heavy Macan well, punching it up to speed effortlessly. As a result, if you do a lot of miles and would value a good blend of efficiency and power, therefore, it’s the ideal Macan to go for.

Porsche Macan GTS PCP offers

The GTS is designed to be the Macan model for the keenest drivers. Launched in 2015, it offers more power, better brakes and a sports exhaust over the Macan S. Consequently, it provides greater acceleration, stopping power and a more engaging exhaust note than other Macan models.

It also features 20-inch alloys designed to echo the look of the RS Spyder racing car. As a result, if you like the idea of a high SUV driving position and family car-practicality, in something that offers the driving feel of a sports car, the Macan is one of the best options.

Porsche Macan Turbo PCP offers

The Turbo model sits at the top of the Porsche Macan tree. It brings more styling tweaks, bigger alloy wheels and adaptive sport seats. Pre-2018 models have bi-xenon headlights, though these were switched out for LED items post-2018.

Power comes from a 3.6-litre engine in earlier cars, though later models get a downsized - but more powerful - 2.9-litre unit. Both of these offer serious muscle, making the Macan a very quick car.
