Best used cars with three years' warranty left

You don't need to buy a brand new car to protect yourself from issues, you can benefit from the warranty even if you buy a used car

Car shopping needn't be a daunting task. It might seem so at first, but laying out what you want from your next car can help to turn the process into a satisfyingly streamlined experience. One area you might be interested in is the length of the warranty, everyone likes to know their purchase is protected, and if that's the case we've got some useful tips for you.

When a brand new car is sold, the manufacturer offers a warranty coverage that protects the driver from various mechanical issues and damage. But that warranty isn't attached to the owner, it's attached to the car. So if that brand new car is then sold on within the warranty protection period, whoever is buying the car will inherit that warranty cover.

This is one of the many perks to buying a used car. Even though it's labelled as 'used', as long as it has been looked after properly there is no more risk in opting for a used car than there is a brand new one.

Making the most of a manufacturer warranty with a used car is quite easy to do, especially when some manufacturers (such as Kia and Ssangyong) are now offering five-year or even seven year-warranties with their new cars. With a bit of digging, you could find yourself driving around in a used car that still has three years of warranty left. If this kind of protection is important to you, you do have a relatively restricted list of manufacturers to choose from, but you'll have the choice of some very desirable cars. Used models from Hyundai, Jeep, MG, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota will all be available with plenty of warranty cover. Read on for our pick of the seven best used cars you can buy with three years' warranty remaining.

Used cars with three years' manufacturer warranty

1. Toyota Aygo

Used deals from £9,299
Monthly finance from £148*

Whether you're looking for an affordable first car with a low insurance rating, or a chic little set of wheels to drive around town, the sharp-looking Toyota Aygo has a variety of feathers in its cap. It's small, too, so it's great for negotiating busy city traffic.

It's incredibly cheap as a used car, and yet it's equipped with a decent amount of interior comforts including air-conditioning and Bluetooth in most cases and there are even Isofix points for child seats in the back.

And as well as being blessed with Toyota’s towering reputation for reliability, the little Aygo gets the benefit of a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty from new, so there's flexibility to make this an incredibly cheap purchase on a two-year-old model and still benefit from that protection. If you're able to stretch to a nearly new model, Toyota started to offer a whopping 10-year warranty in 2021, so getting one of these models should see you into the future comfortably.

2. Renault Clio

Renault Clio front view

Used deals from £12,995
Monthly finance from £202*

Renault began offering a five-year warranty from the end of 2019, which means you'll be looking at the latest version of the Clio launched in 2019. This supermini faces competition from some of Britain's most popular cars, including the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.

It achieved a full five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash testing, so you can expect some of the latest safety equipment like autonomous emergency braking and a lane departure warning system. The 90hp 'TCe' turbocharged petrol engine is punchy and economical, but there is also a hybrid option that promises over 60mpg according to the WLTP tests that were designed to represent real-world driving conditions. There are no diesel options for the Clio following the fall in their popularity.

3. Kia Ceed

Used deals from £14,295
Monthly finance from £212*

If you find yourself driving solo most of the time, but need to fit in the family on the weekends, a hatchback could make for a good choice. Similar in size to a Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus, the Kia Ceed comes with a seven-year warranty from new, so there should be something to suit everyone's price range.

There's a 1.6-litre diesel that's super economical, but with drivers turning away from diesel engines, the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine should prove reasonably efficient. It works well with Kia's smooth automatic gearbox, too, helping to reduce the stresses of town driving.

4. Hyundai Tucson

Used deals from £17,023
Monthly finance from £286*

The outoing version of the Hyundai Tucson was replaced in 2021, which only helps buyers looking for a good deal. It still looks fresh, and most models come with plenty of equipment. It's worth looking for a Premium or Premium SE model, which comes with a reversing camera and leather seats

There's a 1.7-litre diesel engine, but the 2.0-litre diesel has more power and is almost as efficient in the real world. Be aware that some 1.6-litre petrol engines are turbocharged (T-GDi) and some aren't (GDi) - because the former has more power, you'll need to work the engine less so it should prove more economical. Avoid four-wheel-drive models unless it's necessary, as the added weight has an impact on efficiency.

5. Toyota GT86

Used deals from £23,495
Monthly finance from £348*

Sports cars are not supposed to be about being sensible but, hey, if you’ve got yourself a sporty car that’s dependable, then you can simply spend more time enjoying it, right? That certainly would seem to be the logic, should you plump for Toyota’s excellent GT86.

This is a slinky coupe with a characterful-sounding engine and a driving experience that’s sure to make you smile. You can even squeeze a couple of passengers into the rear seats (though only if they’re not enormously tall) and enjoy the extra security of 100,000 miles of warranty.

6. Hyundai i30 Tourer

Used deals from £12,624
Monthly finance from £231*

The i30 Tourer is able to swallow more than 600 litres of luggage. And that’s before you start folding rear seats down. But the i30 is more than just a one-trick pony: it’s refined, economical and the level of fit and finish is genuinely impressive.

Better still, Hyundai clearly has confidence in its products as, although limiting its warranty to five years, it puts no limit at all on the mileage

7. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Used deals from £24,995
Monthly finance from £382*

The Mitsubishi Outlander was one of the first mainstream plug-in hybrid SUVs. Hook it up to a charging point and you can enjoy all the benefits of a large SUV (plenty of interior space, a commanding view of the road, chunky styling) but without the gas-guzzling downsides. In fact, on a full charge, you can travel around 30 miles without needing to engage the petrol engine at all.

The only downside to all this is that Mitsubishi’s five-year warranty is limited to just 62,500 miles.

8. Toyota Prius

Used deals Limited stock

Think hybrid, and you'll probably think of the Toyota Prius. There are two choices: a self-charging hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, both can achieve over 60mpg in day-to-day driving, but keep the Prius Plug-in's battery charged as often as you can and Toyota reckons you can achieve over 230mpg.

Thanks to its CVT automatic gearbox, which maintains an engine speed under acceleration rather than changing gears, the Prius is best suited to relaxed driving.
