Best used cars with five years' warranty left

Worried that buying a used car will leave you vulnerable? These great deals will get you a used car with up to five years' warranty

If you're in the market for a used car you'll probably be thinking about those sweet savings you're going to make. But there are other things to watch out for, too. Of course there's the price, then you have mileage and condition of the car to be aware of, but the savings you'll make on a used car will be quickly cancelled out if that car goes wrong once it's on your driveway.

That's where finding a used car with plenty of manufacturer warranty left can be extremely important. All new cars are protected by some form of warranty that covers drivers against a range of mechanical issues and damage. But the key thing to note is that the warranty stays with the car, so if you're looking at a used car that's only a couple of years old, it's likely that warranty will still be valid and you can reap the benefits.

Car manufacturers offer a vast variety of warranties in terms of length and what they cover, so getting to know which cars have the best coverage might well be something you're interested in. That's where this list of great used cars comes in.

We've done the hard work for you, to bring together all of the best used cars available right now that you could pick up with five years of warranty left. There is a limited choice when it comes to cars with this distinction however, as you're going to be looking for those that come with a seven-year warranty off the shelf. As a result, your only real options are going to be from Kia, MG or SsanYong, but who said that was a bad thing?

Toyota began to offer a 10-year warranty in 2021, so for the ultimate coverage, go for a 2021 or later Toyota. We've avoided Toyota in our list of the best used cars with five years' warranty left in favour of older cars that should be cheaper to buy.

Best used cars with five years' warranty remaining

1. Kia Picanto

Best used city car with five years' warranty left

Used deals from £9,404
Monthly finance from £161*
Korean car giant Kia was a pioneer of the seven-year warranty, and offers its entire range with this excellent offer. You could say that offering this amount of cover has directly influenced the rise in popularity for the South Korean brand. But that would be unfair on the cars that Kia now makes.

Across the board, quality has made major steps in recent years, and cars like the Kia Picanto can now be considered as a genuine alternative to the more established names in the city car market such as the Volkswagen Up. Alongside the stylish exterior, the interior is comfortable and spacious while reliability is general strong, too.

But, if you were worried something would go wrong, the seven-year warranty means that even purchasing a two-year-old Picanto will leave you with longer lasting protection than most brand new alternatives.

2. MG 3

Best used supermini with five years' warranty left

Used deals Limited stock

The MG 3 is a small car that majors on interior space and value for money. The level of fit and finish isn’t really on par with that of a Volkswagen Polo, nor is the attention to detail when it comes to design if we’re being brutally honest.

But it does represent a great opportunity if you're looking for the very cheapest cars on the market, and the fact it comes with a seven-year warranty from new makes it a pretty compelling option if you're not too fussed about posh extras or driving the best cars around.

Because you'll be able to save even more money by going for an older version and still ending up with a truckload of warranty. It's worth noting that the seven-year warranty only applies to MG 3s sold after 1 September 2018, but we'd say that's the best one to go for anyway. It’s also limited to 80,000 miles, but there are plenty of used versions on BuyaCar with barely 10,000 miles on the clock.

3. Kia Stonic

Best used small crossover with five years' warranty left

Used deals from £15,799
Monthly finance from £224*

If you want a funky-looking crossover that’s small enough to nip around busy city streets and squeeze into awkward parking spaces, then the Kia Stonic could be just the ticket.

This is another new Kia that's part of the brand's new wave of high-quality cars. It’s compact, with suitably chunky off-roader-inspired looks and is both fun to whizz around town in and capable of longer motorway journeys. And with that 100,000-mile warranty you’ll have peace of mind if you do end up putting on big miles.

4. Kia Ceed GT

Best used sporty car with five years' warranty left

Used deals Limited stock

Sporty and sensible are not always two words that go comfortably hand in hand when you're talking about cars, but the Kia Ceed GT manages to mix the two and perform brilliantly no matter which direction you prefer.

Yet again, Kia pops up on this list, and yet again the seven-year warranty serves to augment the quality of this car rather than steal all the headlines.  The Ceed GT is fast enough to deliver real performance thrills (although it isn’t as fast as most full-fat hot hatches) while offering decent amounts of space for passengers, it's an all-rounder that can be part of the same conversation as other popular fast hatchbacks such as the Peugeot 308 GT, but perhaps comparing it to a VW Golf GTI might be pushing it a little.

That being said, there's a Golf-like solidity to the way the interior is put together in the Ceed, and that warranty is so difficult to ignore. Do be aware, however, that battery and air-conditioning systems are only covered with a 24-month warranty, which is the case for all other Kia models on this list.

5. Kia Ceed SW

Best used estate with five years' warranty left

Used deals from £19,999
Monthly finance from £293*

Solid, sensible family motoring is more or less defined by the small estate car. It delivers maximum space with the fuel efficiency that you just can’t achieve with the bigger frontal area you’d get in an SUV that offers similar interior dimensions.

These days the estate car fills an ever-shrinking niche in the market. If you like the Ceed hatchback but you need more space, and you don't want to buy an SUV such as the Stonic or Kia Sportage, then your best bet is to go for the Ceed Sportswagon.

You'll get all the quality found in the Ceed hatchback, and decent performance too from the peppy choice of petrol and diesel engines, and year, that seven-year warranty is there once again to ice this good-looking cake. Considering two-year-old models with five years of cover left are available on BuyaCar for less than £200 per month, we imagine it's pretty hard to say no.

6. Kia e-Niro

Best used electric car with five years' warranty left

Used deals from £33,549
Monthly finance from £470*

The Niro was built up from the ground up to be an environmentally friendly car - the three options are a self-charging hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and the electric e-Niro. It's available with two battery packs - a 39kWh option capable of a claimed 180 miles and a 64kWh version capable of up to 280 miles from a full charge.

All cars are well-equipped and include a reversing camera, parking sensors and an eight-inch touchscreen media system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trim levels come with a larger media screen, heated and cooled front seats, wireless phone charging, and LED headlights.

7. Kia Sorento

Best used large SUV with five years' warranty left

Kia Sorento front three quarters view

Used deals from £30,999
Monthly finance from £469*

It's a Kia again; don't say we didn't warn you. This time it's the spacious Kia Sorento, a great family holdall with room for seven over three rows of seats. It has a chunky off-roader look to it, with a raised driving position that's bound to appeal to drivers looking for a comfortable and confident experience with a clear view of the road.

The interior design and quality, meanwhile, is impressively upmarket in look and feel. Quality inside is on par with some more expensive models from Audi and Mercedes. Once again, a two-year-old version of the Sorento will exhibit all of the latest quality on offer from Kia, and those five years of protection are difficult to turn away from at this kind of price.

8. SsangYong Musso

Best used large SUV with five years' warranty left

Used deals Limited stock

If you're in need of a pick-up truck, the SsangYong Musso is well worth considering with its seven-year warranty. The 2.2-litre diesel engine isn't particularly punchy, with 181hp and 420Nm of torque, there are quicker options. But equipped with the automatic gearbox, it can tow 3.5 tonnes and carry a 1,140kg payload at the same time.

It's worth seeking higher trim levels for comforts like a reversing camera, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats, soft leather seats and dual-zone climate control.
