Find a car you want at a price you can afford: from superminis to SUVs among the best used cars for under £150 a month

In need of a new car on a limited budget? Car finance can be a good way to make motoring more affordable, even more so if you go for a used car PCP deal to make those monthly payments as affordable as possible. In fact, for as little as £150 per month and a £1,000 deposit you can sit yourself down in the driving seat of some of the best family hatchbacks around.

It's not just about basic hatchbacks, though. A quick scour of the used car offers on BuyaCar will show you have a choice of tall and spacious SUVs, ultra-practical people carriers and estate cars, or even something with a posh badge on the front within this price range.

All of these offers are based on a four-year PCP finance deal with an 8,000 mile-per year limit, but be aware that your monthly payments can vary depending on your credit score or the size of your initial deposit. So if you do have a little more cash in your pocket those payments can fall even lower.

The at the end of the agreement, you either hand back the car to the dealer with nothing left to pay, assuming you've met the mileage limit or you can make the optional final payment and buy the car outright. If you are certain that would like to own the car, you can instead opt for a hire purchase agreement. Your monthly payments will be larger, but you will be paying off the full value of the car, which will become yours at the end of the contract.

Best used cars under £150 per month

There are currently 3607 cars for under £150 on a typical finance agreement available from Buyacar, we've listed 10 of the best here.

1. Skoda Octavia

Used deals from £6,500
Monthly finance from £123*

The Skoda Octavia hatchback is perhaps the quintessential cheap family hatchback. If it's a mix of practicality and quality that you're after, you won't get much better within this £150 per month budget. Sure, you could spend a little more money and get yourself something a bit more upmarket, but you don't really need to, because the Octavia does pretty much everything to a very similar standard as those more expensive alternatives.

There's no doubt the Octavia's best asset is its practicality. There is space everywhere, whether you're sat in the front or the back, and the boot is bigger than anything in its class. It's good to drive too, with strong engines and a comfortable ride courtesy of mechanical parts shared with the Volkswagen Golf.

Standard equipment is strong too, with include alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity and climate control, things you wouldn't expect to find on a car of this price, available across the range.

2. Volkswagen Golf

Used deals from £6,899
Monthly finance from £130*

We just mentioned it, and here it is. For less than £150 per month, you could be the proud owner of a Volkswagen Golf - a car that looks as if it ought to cost twice as much. This is the previous-generation model that was replaced in 2020, but that doesn't mean it's lost any of its quality. Even if you opt for the cheapest S specification, you'll still have that top quality build and refinement Volkswagen is known for, along with air-conditioning, a media display, bluetooth connectivity and digital radio.

It's most practical as a five-door, but the cheapest models tend to have three doors (two side doors and a hatchback boot). Low-priced models often have the 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine, which offers decent, if not terribly sporty performance. If a family hatchback is what you need, the Volkswagen Golf is a sound choice.

3. Dacia Duster

Used deals from £6,899
Monthly finance from £143*

The Dacia Duster brings everything back to basics. It's a proven commodity at this point, as the Duster has become a hugely popular model for those who are seeking good value simplicity.

It's easy to see why. You can't argue with the price, and to be fair to the Duster, it isn't exactly primitive. It's still comfortable, and if you're able to source a Comfort or Laureate model, there's air-conditioning, alloy wheels and even a radio.

There is some noticeable body roll when you're behind the wheel, but it's no deal breaker if you're just wandering to the shops now and again, and it does offer a decent maximum towing weight of 1,500kg should you have a trailer to pull.

4. Audi A3

Used deals from £9,000
Monthly finance from £162*

At the other end of the spectrum, the Audi A3 brings a whole load of quality to this list. But to get those four rings emblazened across the front of your car at this kind of price, you will need to make some technological sacrifices.

The majority of models on offer at this price are either SE Technik or Sport trim. While you do get that all-important interior quality Audi is known for, and some pretty suave styling on the outside, equipment levels will suffer alongside a higher spec VW Golf.

If the Audi badge is all you're after though, the A3 is a good way to go, and you're friends will all stop and take notice, too.

5. Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

Without a doubt, this venerable seven-seater is one of the best ways to transport a large family. Fortunately, we have a selection of Zafira Tourer models available for under £150 per month on Buyacar.

Driving a Zafira Tourer isn’t the most exhilarating experience, but that's not really the point. Inside there is enough tech to keep the whole family entertained and comfortable, including a touchscreen media system, USB connectivity for your devices and air-conditioning.

It is worth noting that with all seven seats in the upright position you are limited to just 152 litres of boot space (710 with the rearmost seats down), so a roof box may be required if you are taking a large amount of luggage to accompany a large number of passengers.

6. Mini Hatchback

Used deals from £5,499
Monthly finance from £129*

The perfect mix of a zippy engine, responsive steering, and plenty of grip makes the Mini Hatchback enormous fun to drive. For less than £150 per month, you're getting plenty for your money - especially if you get on in Cooper trim.

Just looknig at it, the Mini stands out a mile from most of its competition, that fact it's slightly more expensive is not something you can begrudge this excellent little car. It's just as distinctive on the inside, a circular screen surround dominates the dashboard, just above retro toggle switches. The whole thing oozes quality.

This version of the Mini is best for two people, as the rear seats are cramped and boot space is limited.

7. Kia Sportage

Used deals from £8,099
Monthly finance from £156*

The Kia Sportage is one of the UK's most popular cars, placing first in the 2019 Auto Express Driver Power survey for Britain's best used car to own. It's very easy to see why, thanks to its spacious interior and mammoth seven-year warranty. The latest Sportage model was originally launched in 2016 and recieved a facelift in 2019. Those pre-facelift variants look exceptionally good value now, with used cars still being covered by that warranty.

As with other crossovers, such as the Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008, the Sportage combines the comfort and low running costs of a hatchback with the extra height of an off-roader. But it doesn't feel any bigger than a Ford Fiesta to drive, it's smooth and direct and very easy to manoeuvre.

There aren't many within this £150 per month budget, but you will find most examples come well equipped. A good selection of diesel engines will also help to keep running costs down.

8. Nissan Juke

Used deals from £5,900
Monthly finance from £136*

If nothing else, you will be noticed if you're driving a Nissan Juke. Even a full decade after the original Juke was launched, it remains one of the more striking cars on the market. That fact alone has pushed it to the top of the popularity charts.

The Juke sits in a very particular niche market of mini-SUVs and this gives it a very peculiar list of traits. It's not overly practical compared to something like the Kia Sportage or Vauxhall Zafira Tourer, nor has it got much room for anyone sat in the back. But it does offer that much-sought-after high driving position and a very strong range of engines. But truth be told, the reason you'd opt for the Nissan Juke is because you like the way it looks.

Now this older model has finally been replaced with an all-new Nissan Juke, expect used car prices for the outgoing model to drop and open the door to better equipped examples coming within your £150 per month budget.

9. Ford Focus

Used deals from £5,480
Monthly finance from £127*

The Ford Focus is an obvious choice for anyone looking for the jack-of-all-trades car. It's a practical hatchback, a family car and an excitable run-around all rolled into one. As a result, the Focus has long been the best-selling car in the UK.

As a driver's car, the handling is spot on and the turbo-charged Ecoboost engines have plenty of power. Wherever you take it, you will be satisfied with its performance.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the Focus is the fact it doesn't break the bank. You can pick up a well equipped Titanium model for well within the £150 per month budget.

10. BMW 1 Series

Used deals from £7,490
Monthly finance from £170*

Here we have another upmarket brand sneaking into this very modest price point. The BMW 1 Series is a very realistic alternative to the Audi A3, both in terms of price, and what you get for it. This is the older model that's now been replaced, but some would argue that this version is more exciting due to its rear-wheel-drive setup.

Sitting inside a 1 Series is a very entitled experience, the interior is slick and the level of quality is tangible. There's also an excellent choice of frugal diesel engines that are all available for under £150 per month.

Above all though, the 1 Series feels incredibly sporty to drive. It's nimble and responsive on twisty country lanes, but the more powerful petrol engines such as the M140i will require a more substantial investment.
