When it comes to building two-seater cars, few car makers have a back catalogue as rich and as storied as Mercedes. In fact, you could argue it pioneered this very type of vehicle - after all, the Benz Patent Motorwagen from 1886 (which is considered to be the world’s first production car) only had capacity for the driver and a solitary passenger.

In the many years since then, Mercedes has brought to market a variety of two-seater cars. Perhaps the most famous is the classic 300SL sports car from 1954, which was informally nicknamed the ‘Gullwing’ due to its then-unique door mechanism. Rather than from the side, they were hinged from the roof, which made the doors look like a bird’s wings when they were opened.

Mercedes still makes the SL today, though it’s a far different beast; rather than being a lightweight sports car, it’s now a large and refined grand touring car. Handily, Mercedes does have options if that isn’t the recipe you want from your two-seater Mercedes. If you’d prefer something a bit more compact, there’s the smaller Mercedes SLC roadster to consider, whereas buyers after something sportier can opt for the almost supercar-quick AMG GT performance model.

Two-seater Mercedes cars

1. Mercedes-AMG GT

If you’re after one of the fastest and sportiest two-seater Mercedes models, then the AMG GT high-performance sports car will probably be the speed machine for you. Regardless of the version you go for, the AMG GT offers an incredible turn of speed and lots of grip, and all but the most hardcore of variants are relatively civilised and usable on the public road, too.

Like many other Mercedes models, the AMG GT has been offered in a number of guises. Alongside the regular model, there were slightly sporty GT C and GT S derivatives, while drivers after something a bit more suited to track days have the GT R and the range-topping GT Black Series cars to consider.

By default, all Mercedes AMG GTs are fixed-roof coupes, though if you’d prefer some wind-in-your-hair thrills, every version bar the Black Series was also available with a Roadster derivative that replaced the metal roof with a folding fabric item.

Being the most performance-oriented model in Mercedes’ two-seater range, the AMG GT is a bit more of a bruiser than a cruiser. The 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine emits a rumbly exhaust note and, while it’s not too uncomfortable, the AMG GT does have a firm ride even in its most supple suspension settings. At least the decent 350 litres of luggage volume and the fairly roomy interior mean the AMG GT is more than usable enough on longer journeys.

Because all AMG GT models have a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine, performance is impressive even in the least potent models. The base AMG GT has a very healthy 462hp at its disposal, and this increases even further on the GT S (510hp) and GT C (557hp) models.

More powerful still are the 585hp GT R and the outrageously quick 730hp Black Series cars, though these versions are very rare on BuyaCar as they were only produced in small numbers - and when they do arrive for sale, they’ll command much higher prices than the less hardcore AMG GT derivatives.

2. Mercedes SL

The modern-day Mercedes SL is a little bit different to its distant ancestor, in that the latest model is more a cruiser than a light and agile sports car. While that means it may not be for you if you’re after an engaging drive, it does mean the Mercedes SL is a supremely comfortable and easy car to live with.

A variety of different versions of the current Mercedes SL have been offered, though all of them share the same core recipe. Inside, there’s a well-made, stylish and roomy interior that’s a great place to spend long journeys in. Just bear in mind that, because this generation of Mercedes SL is getting on a bit now (it first went on sale in 2013), some of the interior technology and features aren’t especially cutting edge. This means the car may not be for you if you’d prefer to have more modern gadgets and gizmos in your car.

One of the defining features of this generation of Mercedes SL is its folding metal roof, which helps it to stand out a bit from its rivals - most of the car’s convertible competitors have fabric roofs. The metal setup does weigh more than a fabric mechanism, so the handling around corners is softened a bit, though the trade-off is better refinement and noise insulation when you’re driving around with the roof up.

With the roof down, the luggage volume does drop from 500 litres to 350 litres, though the shape of the boot and its decent-sized opening means there’s still a usable amount of storage space.

If you plan on using the Mercedes SL for more regular drives, the 367hp SL400 and 455hp SL500 models will be the more suitable options, as they offer smooth and strong performance yet also aren’t outrageously expensive to run by sports car standards. A pair of faster-still AMG models - the 585hp SL63 and the 630hp SL65 - were also available, which offer sensational performance, though are expensive to run and command a much higher premium on the used market than the SL400 and SL500 versions.

3. Mercedes SLC

If the Mercedes SL is a bit on the large side for you, then the Mercedes SLC could fit the bill for you. This is because it’s a much smaller car than the SL, yet has many of the attributes that make it an appealing ownership prospect for two-seater performance car buyers.

For example, despite its sleek looks and sporty on-paper credentials, the Mercedes SLC isn’t the sharpest-handling two-seater car of this size, so won’t be for you if you’re specifically after something thrilling behind the wheel. Instead, the SLC follows on from its bigger sibling in being a more comfort-oriented cruiser, with good ride comfort and noise insulation levels to make this Mercedes surprisingly relaxing to drive for a two-seater sports car.

The interior is well-built, too, though the fact the car is getting on a bit now (the SLC that debuted in 2016 is essentially an updated version of the Mercedes SLK from 2011) means it doesn’t feel as up-to-date as other upmarket sports cars of a similar vintage.

While the in-car technology dates the car a bit, the SLK still holds up against newer cars on the practicality front with its decently roomy cabin and respectable 355 litres of luggage volume - though bear in mind that access to the boot is quite limited when the folding metal roof is stowed away.

Being a somewhat sporty car, the Mercedes SLC was available with a selection of peppy petrol engines. If you want a decent turn of speed from your used SLC, avoid the 156hp SLC 180 and 184hp SLC 200 models, as while not slow they don’t have amazing performance on offer. A good all-round petrol pick is the 245hp SLC 300, though if you can afford the purchase premium and running costs, there was also a lively SLC 43 AMG version with 367hp at its disposal along with a more exciting engine sound.

If you plan on using the Mercedes SLC for regular driving duties, don’t discount the SLC 250d diesel. While the on-paper prospect of a diesel sports car may seem odd to some, the 204hp diesel offers respectable performance, and its combination of great fuel economy and fairly hushed nature at a cruise means it’s a worth considering if you do lots of long journeys.
