The Golf looks expensive but with so many to choose from and used models lasting so well, there's no need to pay a high price for a good one

You may be able to find several hatchbacks cheaper than the Volkswagen Golf but none of them feel as well built, classy or competent. Volkswagen has had a long time to hone the Golf recipe (this is the seventh generation version) and it shows.

With a Golf for virtually all tastes, from the modest entry-level S model, through to the affordable but desirable Match and SE trims, the powerful GTD and GTI hot hatches, and the GTE plug-in hybrid, to the super-fast Golf R and all-electric e-Golf. Some versions are available in three-door form as well as the more common five-door body. We weren't lying, there's something for everyone here.

But no matter which model you eventually go for, you can be confident that it will be well equipped with a high-quality interior and tasteful design. Prices are on the high side - at least for newer models - but your reward is reasonably slow depreciation and plenty of willing buyers when it’s time for a change. This also means that monthly payments, if you go for PCP finance, should be quite low, too.

VW Golf S offers

This is the cheapest trim but doesn't skimp on kit with front electric windows, body-coloured electric mirrors, an electronic parking brake with hill start assist, a digital radio, a colour touchscreen display, phone connectivity, air-conditioning and split-fold rear seats all standard. Also standard is the Golf’s usual high-quality feel. A shame it has steel wheels with hubcaps (not pictured above).

Engines are a mix of low-power 1.0 (later models), 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrols, and a 1.6 TDI diesel. It’s a carpool model really, but if you’re on a budget and your driving routine is undemanding, it’s ideal.

VW Golf SE offers

Golf SE models bring some welcome features including alloy wheels, rear electric windows, adaptive cruise control and emergency city braking, and boast a higher level of perceived quality over S trim thanks to features such as a leather-covered steering wheel, too.

The SE may not have that much extra over the S, but it feels like a much more complete, desirable package than the basic-feeling S, so if you're on a budget, but don't want to skimp on too many things, SE models are a better choice.

VW Golf Match offers

Mid-spec Match builds on SE with a richer feeling interior and even more equipment. Most notably there’s a front differential lock that sharpens the handling when cornering, front and rear parking sensors, folding mirrors with puddle lights, and a reverse-activated, dipping door mirror.

It also features a selection of driving modes – standard, sport, economy and individual – that enable you to adjust the car’s steering weight, and brake and throttle responses to suit.

The 150hp 2.0 TDI engine is a great partner here: powerful, smooth and economical, but the 125hp 1.4 TSI petrol is more refined and, with the DSG automatic gearbox, very easy to drive.

Whatever the engine, the Match has a very comfortable and quiet ride, in part thanks to its relatively small alloy wheels, meaning more rubber between you and the road. Sportier versions with low-profile tyres are much less comfortable.

The Golf Match Edition replaced Match in 2015. It differs from Match only in having a Discover Navigation system as standard. Individually, this system cost £1,100 but Match Edition cost only £100 more than Match, making it excellent value. If you don't want a particularly sporty model, this is a fantastic all-round option.

VW Golf GT offers

GT brings a feeling of luxury with a sporty flavour in the shape of larger alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension, ambient lighting, even more brushed silver inserts and chrome, and brighter tail lights. As a result, it's not quite as comfortable as Match versions.

GT Edition replaced GT trim in 2015, offering a panoramic sunroof and 18-inch alloy wheels, for £300 more. That's a small price for these extras, which individually typically cost far more than this.

However, this and GT are not as comfortable-riding as Match, which really is the best trim for most drivers.

VW Golf R-Line offers

This trim has Golf R looks without the performance. It cost £995 more than the GT but adds a bodykit and even a discreet R badge on the grille. However, the wheels are only 17-inch and the exhaust has twin rather than quad tailpipes.

The interior is dark and moody alleviated by some splashes of alloy for the pedals and a sports steering wheel borrowed from the R. Have it with either the 150hp 1.4 TSI or 2.0 TDI.

We wouldn't bother, though. GT versions feel sporty enough for most drivers, while if you just want a sensible comfort-oriented Golf, the Match versions make even more sense.

VW Golf GTD offers

The GTD provides hot hatch performance with lower running costs, as it's powered by a diesel engine. It’s a little more discreet than the GTI but almost as entertaining thanks, especially, to its strong overtaking acceleration. It’s also very relaxing to drive at motorway speeds.

Don't expect 1.6 TDI or even 2.0 TDI economy; nearing 50mpg is around the best it’ll manage in reality. Considering how impressive the 2.0 TDI is, we'd be tempted to stick with this, since it's not much slower and is enjoyable to drive, while the petrol GTI is far more exciting than the GTD.

The interior in the GTD is influenced by the GTI with check upholstery and lots of brushed metal detailing. Being a diesel, average mileages are higher than for the GTI but thanks to the model’s impressive build quality, even if you choose a model that has covered a reasonably high distance, it should still feel fresh.

VW Golf GTI offers

There are quicker, more focused rivals including the Ford Focus ST but no hot hatch blends performance, comfort and usability quite like a Golf GTI. Earlier generations have occasionally missed the mark but the current seventh-generation version hits the target bang in the centre with strong performance, a high equipment level and the kind of discreet styling fans of the GTI appreciate.

Manual versions are a little more engaging but the DSG automatic gearbox is easily up to the job, too. Since this is a capable fast car rather than an out-and-out sports car, many drivers will feel that the automatic actually suits the car better.

Over time, this GTI has spawned more powerful spin-offs including the Performance and TCR that’s almost as powerful as the R model, although unlike that car, it’s not four-wheel drive.

VW Golf GTE offers

This plug-in hybrid Golf is powered by a 150hp 1.4 TSI petrol engine and a 103hp electric motor. As a result, it’s slightly quicker than the GTD and not much slower than the GTI, although thanks to its higher weight, not quite as fun to drive as either.

But of course, that’s not its point. What is, is its low emissions (it costs nothing to tax) and decent fuel economy, plus its ability to travel for up to 30 miles on electric power alone. The management system that juggles petrol and electric power is extremely impressive. Make sure you plug in regularly, though, as otherwise you'll get barely any better fuel economy than going for a conventional petrol model.

As a new car, it’s aimed at company car drivers looking to reduce their tax burden. However, private buyers can benefit from its pure electric range, too. On top of that, it comes well equipped with climate control and smart, blue-check, GTI-style seats.

VW Golf R offers

If the GTI isn't quite quick or entertaining enough for you, there’s always the Golf R. Its 300hp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and four-wheel-drive system puts it head-to-head with rivals including the Ford Focus RS and Audi RS3. However, in true Golf tradition, it looks classier and more discreet than all of them.

Initially, it was offered with a manual gearbox but later the automatic - with launch control that can reduce acceleration times - became standard. This is a far more exciting car than the GTI. Therefore, if you want a more engaging drive, it's definitely worth hunting down a manual model.

It may look discreet but it still has a bodykit, LED taillights and lowered sports suspension plus arch-filling alloy wheels. The interior is a blend of GTI and luxury car. It’s still roomy in there but the boot is smaller than in standard versions due to the presence underneath of the car’s four-wheel-drive mechanicals.

VW e-Golf offers

Like the rest of the Golf range, this all-electric Golf was updated in 2017. Crucially, its driving range was one of the things to benefit, rising from 119 miles to 186 miles (expect 130 miles in the real world). In addition, it can be charged from zero to 80% capacity at a fast-charging point in just 45 minutes, although it still takes four hours on a home charger.

At the same time, power rose from 115hp to 135hp. It feels more lively as a consequence and sprightlier than other mainstream rivals including the Nissan Leaf. Consequently, if you fancy an e-Golf, it's worth tracking down a more recent model.

Perhaps its biggest advantage over other electric vehicles, though, is its conventional Golf looks. Apart from its badging and special wheels, it’s identical to other Golfs. It’s just as roomy in the back, too, because the electric motor is at the front, where the engine would be.

Staying with the interior, it’s more exciting here than a conventional Golf thanks to features such as a 12.3-inch digital display that sits in place of traditional dials and which lets you prioritise things like range and local charging points.
