Electric car and plug-in hybrid buyers benefit from eight years' free roadside assistance with Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen and DS models

Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen and DS - Citroen's more upmarket division - are now offering eight years' free roadside assistance on all of their electric and plug-in hybrid cars giving drivers added peace of mind.

For motorists wary about going electric, this should provide some extra confidence about never getting marooned in the middle of nowhere having run out of charge - whether that was ever a likely prospect or not. While electric car sales are starting to ramp up in the UK, plug-in hybrid cars are still a novelty for many drivers. Though electric cars may appeal on paper, therefore, a number of motorists are still concerned about whether electric cars can travel far enough per charge for them and whether this less established technology is as reliable as conventional petrol or diesel equivalents.

Used cars to be covered by roadside assistance

This move by Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen and DS - which together form Groupe PSA - means that those opting for a fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle get eight years - or 100,000 miles' worth - of roadside assistance included in the price of their car. That compares with just one year's cover for those choosing one of the brands' petrol or diesel models.

The eight-year period runs from the date an electric or plug-in vehicle is registered and can be transferred to subsequent owners. Consequently, even those buying a five-year old used model in future and running it for three years before selling, will be fully covered, without having to pay extra for roadside assistance. So used buyers will want to keep an eye out for 2020-on used models.

The roadside assistance package covers home and roadside repairs as well as roadside recovery. If the car can't be fixed at home or at the side of the road - depending where you are when you encounter an issue - this package ensures the car is transported to the nearest authorised repairer, with onward travel provided for up to seven passengers to their final destination (within the UK).

Also covered is assistance for running out of fuel or charge, with electric car drivers either provided with a short charge at the roadside or taken to the nearest suitable chargepoint. Following this move, the free roadside assistance package runs for the same amount of time as the battery warranty on these electric or plug-in models.

'Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles represent the fastest growing vehicle segment in the UK. With more buyers looking to make the switch, we hope this initiative will give first-time electric car buyers the peace of mind they’re looking for,' states Richard Dyson, Groupe PSA Parts and Service Director UK.
