Find the car you want at a cost you can afford: check out the best used cars for less than £150 per month - from superminis to SUVs

Need a new car on a limited budget? Car finance can be a good way to make motoring more affordable, even more so if you go for a used car PCP finance deal to make those monthly payments as low as possible. In fact, for as little as £150* per month and a £1,000 deposit you can get behind the wheel of some of the best family hatchbacks around.

It's not just basic hatchbacks, though. The best used car deals on BuyaCar comprise a broad choice of tall and spacious SUVs, ultra-practical people carriers and estate cars, and even models with a posh badge on the front at this price range.

All of these offers are based on a four-year PCP finance contract with an 8,000 mile-per year limit, but be aware that your monthly payments can vary depending on your credit score (the better your score, the lower your payments should be) and how much you put down as your initial deposit. So, if you do have a little more cash in your pocket to put down a larger deposit now, those payments can fall even lower.

Then at the end of the agreement, you can either choose to hand the car back with nothing left to pay - provided you've kept the car in good condition and have stayed below the pre-agreed mileage limit - or you can make the optional final payment and buy the car outright.

Best used cars under £150 per month

There are currently  on a typical finance agreement available from BuyaCar. We've listed 10 of the best here, including upmarket hatchbacks, high-riding SUVs and seven-seater people carriers.

1. Skoda Octavia

Used deals from £7,490
Monthly finance from £487*

The Skoda Octavia hatchback is a spacious, good quality and relatively affordable family hatchback. If it's a mix of practicality and quality that you're after, you won't get much better within this £150-per-month budget. Sure, you could spend a little more money and get yourself something a bit more upmarket, but you don't really need to, because the Octavia does pretty much everything to a very similar standard as those more expensive alternatives.

The Octavia's best asset is its practicality. There is space everywhere, whether you're sitting in the front or the back, and the boot is one of the biggest in a car this size. It's good to drive too, with strong engines and a comfortable ride courtesy of mechanical parts shared with the Volkswagen Golf.

There's a strong level of standard equipment, too. The list includes alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity and climate control - things you won't often find in cars at this price range.

2. Volkswagen Golf

Used deals from £7,990
Monthly finance from £252*

We just mentioned it, and here it is. For less than £150 per month, you could get the keys to a Volkswagen Golf - a car that feels as if it ought to cost twice as much. This is the previous-generation model that was replaced by a new version in 2020, but used models are still just as solid and refined as they were when they were new. Even if you opt for the cheapest S specification, you'll still have that top quality feel Volkswagen is known for, along with air-conditioning, a dashboard-mounted media display, bluetooth connectivity and a digital radio.

The Golf is most practical in its five-door form - there's also a five-door Golf Estate with a larger boot if you're in need of more luggage space - but the cheapest models tend to have three doors (two side doors and a hatchback boot). Low-priced models often have the 1.2-litre 'TSI' petrol engine, which offers surprisingly nippy acceleration for such a small engine. If a family hatchback is what you need, the Volkswagen Golf is a sound choice.

3. Dacia Duster

Used deals from £6,980
Monthly finance from £219*

The Dacia Duster may be cheap, but it's a stylish, high-riding SUV with a comfy ride, plenty of space and a good amount of equipment on board. As a result, it's a great all-rounder for £150 per month on PCP finance.

Yes, the entry-level Access model is extremely basic, however go for an Essential, Comfort or Prestige version and you get lots of standard equipment for the money including air-conditioning, alloy wheels and a digital radio with Bluetooth.

Due to its tall stance and high driving position, the Duster prioritises comfort over sportiness, but it's still satisfying to drive and far more planted on the road than older SUVs. Meanwhile, if you want a relatively new and affordable car for towing, the Duster offers a decent maximum towing weight of 1,500kg if you go for one of the petrol TCe 130 or TCe 150 models or a dCi diesel version.

4. Audi A3

Used deals from £9,850
Monthly finance from £269*

The Audi A3, meanwhile, prioritises a feeling of quality over sheer value. The interior is comfy, stylish and very well built, and you get a range of strong petrol and diesel engines to choose from. As most of the engine range has power-boosting turbochargers, even the small petrol engines offer decent performance, with the 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre units proving surprisingly strong.

The majority of models on offer at this price are either SE Technik or Sport models. These don't look quite as striking as more pricey S line versions, but do offer all of the basic kit you could want and offer a comfy ride.

If you want a high-quality hatchback for a lower cost, it's worth considering the VW Golf above, as this is closely related to the A3, but should be a better value option.

5. Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

Without a doubt, this spacious seven-seater is one of the best ways to transport a large family. Fortunately, it's also one of the most affordable seven-seaters of this age; we have a selection of Zafira Tourer models available for under £150 per month on BuyaCar.

The Zafira Tourer is pleasant to drive and comfortable. Inside there is enough tech to keep the whole family entertained and comfortable, including a touchscreen media system, USB connectivity for your devices and air-conditioning.

It is worth noting that with all seven seats in use you are limited to just 152 litres of boot space, which is on the small side, so a roof box may be required if you need to carry a large amount of luggage and seven people. If you only ever carry five, however, you can fold the third row of seats down and have a substantial 710 litres of boot space available.

6. Mini Hatchback

Used deals from £7,500
Monthly finance from £0*

The Mini Hatchback offers an appealing mix of zippy engines, responsive steering and plenty of grip, which makes it enormous fun to drive. For less than £150 per month, you're getting plenty of car for your money here - especially if you get a Mini Cooper.

Just looking at it, the Mini stands out a mile from most of its competition, and while cash prices can be a little on the high side, it's still good value on PCP finance, as the car retains its value well - meaning that the car you hand back at the end of the contract is still worth a lot, reducing your monthly payments.

The Mini is just as distinctive on the inside, with a circular central media system that dominates the dashboard, along with retro toggle switches. The whole thing oozes quality. This version of the Mini offers plenty of space in the front seats, though the rear seats are a little tight and boot space is limited. If you want a more practical Mini, check out the five-door Mini Hatchback, as this provides more room in the boot and for rear passengers.

7. Kia Sportage

Used deals from £7,194
Monthly finance from £220*

The Kia Sportage is one of the UK's most popular cars, placing first in the 2019 Auto Express Driver Power survey for Britain's best used cars to own. It's very easy to see why, thanks to its spacious interior and mammoth seven-year warranty. The latest Sportage model was originally launched in 2016 and received an update in 2019. Those pre-update variants look exceptionally good value now, with these cars still being covered by that original manufacturer warranty.

As with other crossovers, such as the Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 3008, the Sportage combines the comfort and low running costs of a hatchback with the extra height of an off-roader. But it doesn't feel much bigger than a Ford Fiesta to drive, it's smooth and direct and very easy to manoeuvre.

There aren't many versions available for this £150 per month budget, but most examples are well equipped, so there should be a number of appealing cars to choose from. If you're looking for low monthly payments and low running costs, the diesel versions could be a wise choice - especially for those who cover tens of thousands of miles every year.

8. Nissan Juke

Used deals from £6,500
Monthly finance from £182*

The Nissan Juke may have been around for more than a decade, but it remains one of the most striking cars on the market. This has consequently led to the Juke selling in huge numbers. The fact it was on sale for so long and so popular, means that there are a vast array of used models to choose from, which should enable you to easily find one with a colour, trim and engine combination that suits your needs.

As a mini-SUV, the Juke is not overly practical compared to something like the larger Kia Sportage or Vauxhall Zafira Tourer, nor does it have the most room for anyone sitting in the back. However, it's easy to drive and park and offers a high driving position and a strong range of engines - including a punchy but efficient turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol.

Now this older model has finally been replaced with a new Nissan Juke, expect used car prices for the outgoing model to drop and open the door to better equipped examples coming within your £150 per month budget, making it a great time to get the older version.

9. Ford Focus

Used deals from £5,394
Monthly finance from £209*

The Ford Focus is an obvious choice for anyone looking for the jack-of-all-trades car. It's a practical hatchback, a family car and an enjoyable-to-drive runaround all rolled into one. As a result, the Focus has long been one of the best-selling cars in the UK.

As a driver's car, the car is satisfying to drive around corners and the turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engines have plenty of power. It works well whether you spend your life around town or out on faster roads like motorways.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the Focus is the fact it doesn't break the bank. You can pick up a well equipped Titanium model for well within the £150 per month budget.

10. BMW 1 Series

Used deals from £6,999
Monthly finance from £248*

The BMW 1 Series is a sporty alternative to the Audi A3, offering a sharper drive. This is the older model of the 1 Series that's now been replaced, but that means that used prices have tumbled - so you get more for your money - and this version powers its rear wheels, being the only hatchback to do so, which is a feature typically found in sports cars. As a result, this version of the 1 Series has improved grip when accelerating and no matter how hard you accelerate, the steering wheel never tugs in your hands, which can happen in other hatchbacks that power their front wheels.

Sitting inside a 1 Series is an enjoyable experience, as the interior design is slick and the level of quality is high, with a sophisticated media system available. There's also an excellent choice of frugal diesel engines that are all available for under £150 per month. So, if you cover tens of thousands of miles, going diesel could be a wise choice. If not, there are a number of appealing petrols to choose from.

Above all though, the 1 Series feels uniquely sporty to drive for this type of car. It's nimble and responsive on twisty country lanes and the more powerful petrol engines such as the turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol in the M140i make it incredibly quick. You will have to pay more for one of these, but in return you get features more normally found in an expensive sports car, all crammed into a hatchback body.
