It's also the kind of saving that could see you sat in the driver's seat of a Range Rover Evoque or even a Mercedes E-Class - cars that on the face of it seem incredibly upmarket - with a typical four-year PCP finance contract and only a small initial deposit.

These prices are based on PCP agreements with an 8,000 mile-per-year limit (7.9% APR) at the time of writing, but be aware that monthly payments are subject to credit checks. Of course, all of these deals can be adjusted to meet your own needs, and they're all available right here on BuyaCar, so we will deliver the car to your door once you've found the perfect deal.

Best used cars for under £300 per month

1. Range Rover Evoque

Best used car under £300 per month for the fashion-conscious

Our pick Range Rover Evoque Pure
Used deals from £12,441
Monthly finance from £341*

First up is the glitz and glamour of the Range Rover fleet. The Range Rover Evoque has become something of a fashion statement since its initial launch in 2011, becoming a staple among the rich and famous.

As a new car, it comes with a very steep price tag - from around £33,000 up to £55,000, so the sensible way to get your hands on one is to head straight to the used market, and there are plenty of options to choose from.

Within this budget in particular, we've gone for Range Rover Evoque models in Pure trim, as these offer halogen headlights, cruise control, an eight-inch touchscreen media display and an eight-speaker sound system, however you can go further down the spec tree and find even cheaper Evoque models.

2. Mercedes E-Class

Best used car under £300 per month for executives

Our pick Merecedes-Benz E220d AMG Line
Used deals from £12,990
Monthly finance from £230*

Family cars don’t come much more luxurious than the Mercedes E-Class. The upmarket German car maker has continually pushed the boundaries of quality, and the E-Class delivers it in spades.

In estate guise, it offers plenty of practicality, with a huge amount of space in the back. The boot is competitively sized, if not absolutely spectacular, but it will take more than enough luggage for all but the most over-prepared of travellers.

It has one of the smoothest rides within its class, and although you will be restricted to the less powerful E220d within this budget, it still picks up plenty of speed when you need it. Standard equipment includes sat-nav, a reversing camera and leather seats, but keep an eye out for AMG Line models within budget, as they will come with much more kit and some sporty styling tweaks.

3. BMW i3

Best used car under £300 per month for emission free motoring

Our pick BMW i3 Rex
Used deals from £20,995
Monthly finance from £506*

The BMW i3 is still so modern and up to date that you might struggle to believe that it’s been around since 2013. It can be bought as a pure electric car or as the i3 Rex (short for range extender), with a tiny petrol engine to accompany the electric power. Theoretical range of the pure electric i3 runs to 188 miles per charge, while the range extender officially extends range to 276 miles, but don’t expect to get figures anywhere near this in the real world.

A budget of £300 per month will be enough to get you into a 2018 model, which has an improved charging time (around three hours from a fast-home charger) over older models. Aim for a range extender (Rex) model if you can find one to reduce the need to charge quite so often.

4. Peugeot 308

Best used car under £300 per month for hot-hatch lovers

Our pick Peugeot 308 GT
Used deals Limited stock

Another very tempting offer is this Peugeot 308 in GT spec, a capable and sporty hatchback with plenty of equipment on board.

Because the GT trim is second only to the GTI on the 308 spec tree, you are getting an awful lot of car for you £300 per month budget. For starters you get a 1.6-litre petrol engine with over 200hp - also known as plenty- and the addition of twin exhuast pipes gives it an extra sporty twist.

Inside, you get all the basics, including a 9.7-inch touchcscreen media system, air-conditioning and sat nav, but the GT trim also gets you autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, you also get some sharp looking red-stiching on the upholstery.

5. Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer

Best used car under £300 per month for 7-seat thrills

Our pick Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer Touch Edition
Used deals from £15,151
Monthly finance from £0*

Another relatively new car, and this time it's the Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer. We've gone for it in Touch Edition trim, and we're pleased to say that for under £300 per month you can get hold of one of these with virtually no miles on the clock.

In terms of its credentials, the Grand C4 SpaceTourer is a very capable seven-seater that offers shed loads of space within a very stylish and chiselled physique, making it hugely comfortable to sit in for all seven passengers, but also comfotable to drive around even the tightest of city streets.

As expected from a car this size, practicality is through the roof - there are three Isofix points - and you get climate control, parking sensors, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

6. Volvo S90

Best used car under £300 per month for Scandi-cool

Our pick Volvo S90 D5
Used deals from £18,490
Monthly finance from £0*

While other cars on this list compete with one another for driving excitement or tyre-shredding acceleration, the S90 goes for a more relaxing approach. The minimalist interior is a serene place to spend hours in complete comfort, aided by the soft suspension, which soaks up bumps and potholes with aplomb.

Unsurprisingly for Volvo, it’s also very safe. Euro NCAP awarded it five stars, and it even has an advanced emergency braking system that can detect both humans, and large animals. A budget of £300 will get you in and around models from 2019.

7. Seat Alhambra

Best used car under £300 per month for seven-seatists

Used deals from £21,950
Monthly finance from £0*

Fashionable but fuel-thirsty SUVs have replaced the humble and humdrum MPV as the de facto car of choice for transporting seven people.

While SUVs look tough, they are pretty pricey. One of the best is the Volvo’s venerable XC90, it's great, but even three year old models start from over £400 per month on BuyaCar. In contrast, you can a similarly aged Seat Alhambra models for less than £300 per month.

With 658 litres of boot space (with the rear seats folded down), electronic sliding doors, and enough cubbyholes to get lost in, the Seat could share Bear Grylls’ famous mantra of improvise, adapt, overcome.

8. Audi A4

Best used car under £300 per month for small premium family cars

Our pick Audi A4 S line
Used deals from £15,649
Monthly finance from £466*

The upmarket Audi A4 family saloon offers class leading comfort, loads of useful in-car tech, and a subtle yet sharp design that will make you feel every penny of that £300 per month.

It’s smaller than the other upmarket family saloon on this list, the Mercedes E-Class, meaning your budget will stretch further. In fact, you can get yourself a S line spec A4 with lower and stiffer suspension, LED headlights and the funky dynamic indicators, albeit with the least powerful petrol engine in the range. If you're able to stretch the budget even further beyond the £300 mark, we'd recommend something with a little more power.
