Understated and subtle are two words you might use to describe the look of the VW Golf R, but you wouldn’t say the same about the performance. It’s every bit as quick as hot hatchbacks like the Honda Civic Type R, Ford Focus RS and Renault Megane RS, but with the added reassurance of being based on a VW Golf.

The VW Golf R three-door is arguably more stylish than the five-door version. It’s also a little more exclusive, with many buyers preferring the convenience of a pair of rear doors. But why not be a little more selfish? You’re buying the car for you, not your back-seat passengers after all.

Launched in 2014, the VW Golf R sits above the GTI in the Golf range. Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 300hp or 310hp, depending on the date of registration. Power was upped from 300hp to 310hp as part of the 2017 update, but was downgraded back to 300hp in 2018 due to emissions regulations.

The VW Golf R is quick enough, regardless of the output, and unlike the Golf GTI, which sends its power to the front wheels, the R is four-wheel-drive. This helps to harness all that power when accelerating, as well as to provide reassurance on slippery roads. You can get a six-speed manual gearbox or a six- or seven-speed automatic transmission, known as a 'DSG'. The latter features launch control for extra bragging rights on social media, as it makes the most of the power and grip on offer when pulling away.

One of the benefits of driving a Golf R over a coupe or sports car is the car’s practicality. The four-wheel-drive system takes up a little space under the boot floor, so the luggage capacity drops from 380 litres in the standard Golf to 314 litres, but you’re unlikely to notice too much of a difference. If you want more space, take a look at the practical VW Golf R Estate.

The VW Golf R three-door lived on until 2020, so there are plenty to choose from on BuyaCar. It’s worth noting that the current eighth-generation Golf is five-door only, so this seventh-generation version is your only option if you’re after a relatively new Golf R three-door model. It’s rarer than the five-door, so you’ll enjoy a little exclusivity.

As the flagship model in the range, the VW Golf R comes with a long list of standard equipment, but it’s worth noting the changes to the media system. Early cars came with a six-inch touchscreen media system to control the audio and sat-nav functions, but later cars feature an 8.5-inch display with gesture control - where certain hand movements can be used to control media system features.

An impressive 9.2-inch display was available as an option, while later cars also benefited from a digital instrument panel in front of the driver rather than conventional dials. In short, the later the car, the more sophisticated the technology.

Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, lowered suspension, black brake calipers, ‘R’ styling pack, ‘R’ badging and a unique ‘R’ radiator grille. Early cars get bi-xenon headlights with a cornering function, while post-update models gain full LED headlights with dynamic curve lighting.

Inside, the Golf R features carbon touch decorative inserts on the dashboard and door cards, a leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel, cloth/velour racing seats, ‘R’ gear knob and a unique instrument cluster.

Pure White is the standard colour, with Tornado Red, Reflex Silver, Limestone Grey, Deep Black, Oryx White and the popular Lapiz Blue available as options. Also look out for Golf R models fitted with the optional 19-inch alloy wheels, as these are a popular addition.

Volkswagen Golf R Performance Pack

The R Performance Pack was a £2,300 option when new, so it’s well worth seeking out on the used car market. The package includes 19-inch alloy wheels, performance brakes, silver brake calipers, the removal of the 155mph speed limiter, and a performance rear spoiler.

Other desirable options included carbon fibre door mirrors (£450), extra tinting for the rear windows (£95) and heated leather seats with adjustable lumbar support (£2,615). The Akrapovic titanium exhaust system is another desirable upgrade. It saves 7kg in weight, features round twin tailpipes, left and right, and a valve control system. The original owner would have paid £3,000 for the privilege if this is fitted.
