Welcome to the new 2020 BMW 4 Series Coupe, on sale now from just under £40,000. A variety of petrol and diesel models are available to order (some with fuel economy-boosting mild-hybrid technology), with cars set to arrive on UK roads later in the year. Currently, there are only two-door coupe models on offer but it is expected that a sleek five-door hatchback 'Gran Coupe' model and a convertible will join the Coupe in due course.

BMW’s new shape 4 Series has grown in size compared to its predecessor but remains a four-seater coupe and still competes against models such as the Audi A5. Even though the 4 Series has a couple of rivals, two-door coupes are something of a dying breed these days, thanks to a large proportion of drivers opting for more practical hatchbacks and high-riding SUVs.

Those who crave a coupe but need more practicality meanwhile, can wait for the 4 Series Gran Coupe (which adds two rear doors plus a hatchback). To ensure attention for its latest model, BMW has given the 2020 4 Series Coupe a radical new look, a long list of potential equipment and a choice of frugal or potent engines and several offering a blend of both.

What will gain the most attention, however, is the new model's exterior styling. While the outgoing car is sleek, neatly detailed and attractive - have a look at the image below, to make up your own mind - BMW has prioritised shock factor with the 2020 version (pictured above). The shape is bulbous, the grille seriously oversized and the delicate lines of the old car replaced with a much more in-your-face look.

BMW is only currently accepting orders for high-spec M Sport and M Sport Pro models, which have additional kit. Also, being that SE and Sport are common trim levels throughout the BMW range, it's likely that these cheaper trim levels will come at a later stage.

BMW’s new 4 Series will feature a long list of standard kit including full-LED headlights, heated sports seats, cruise control, front collision warning, lane departure warning, 40:20:40 folding rear seats, 440 litres of boot space and BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional - in English that means there's a 12.3-inch digital drivers’ display instead of a conventional speedometer and rev counter, plus a 10.3-inch media system. Also included as standard are Android Auto and Apple CarPlay plus real-time traffic information.

M Sport and M Sport Pro models, meanwhile, come with sportier body styling - including various black gloss accents – sports seats, an M leather steering wheel, dark headlining and 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels.

There are a number of other options designed to give the 4 Series a sportier feel. These include firmer M Sport suspension, adaptive M suspension with variable sport steering - which lets you tailor the suspension and steering feel to your tastes or the type of driving you're doing - M Sport brakes and an M Sport differential. M Sport Pro models even get a 'sprint' function which gives drivers a short burst of additional performance.

Other optional equipment includes adaptive LED headlights - which swivel as you turn the wheel (including BMW’s super bright 'Laserlight' technology) - a head-up display, which beams driving information onto the windscreen, parking assistant plus (which includes a 360-degree camera which displays a feed of the area surrounding the car), five interior leather hues, two types of suspension, adaptive cruise control and a carbon pack (which subtly changes the aesthetics of a 4 Series by adding darker exterior trims). As a note, the last option is only available on high-performance M440i and M440d models.

BMW 4 Series Coupe prices and delivery dates

Interested parties can order their new 4 Series now but deliveries aren’t expected to start until October 2020. That is unless you want a six-cylinder diesel, as those aren’t due until spring 2021.

As mentioned earlier, the new 2020 BMW 4 Series Coupe starts just under £40,000 for the petrol model and goes all the way up to £54,000 for a performance-orientated M440i version. For a full pricing breakdown take a look at the table below.

2020 BMW 4 Series Coupe engines

BMW now includes mild-hybrid technology as standard on all new diesel 4 Series Coupes and the flagship petrol engine in the M440i. The mild-hybrid system works like many others and uses the engine’s starting system to take some of the strain of driving and hence cut fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Aside from the M440i, a powerful 3.0-litre, six-cylinder model, there are two petrol engines in the range: the 420i and 430i - with both being 2.0-litre four-cylinder units. The only diesel available from launch is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder badged up as a 420d. The larger capacity 430d and M440d - which will feature 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engines - are not due to arrive until spring 2021.

Irrespective of size and fuel type, all engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. There is also the option of four-wheel-drive (BMW calls this xDrive) on all diesels and the high powered M440i petrol. There has been no confirmation of if or when a new M4 will arrive but we fully suspect it will follow in due course.

BMW 4 Series economy, emissions and performance

Starting with the petrol models, 420i variants come with 184hp and 300Nm of torque. This translates into a top speed of 149mph and a 0 to 62mph sprint time of 7.5 seconds. Emissions and economy figures are the best of all the petrols, with BMW claiming 48.7-53.3mpg (depending on specification and wheel size) and 122-132g/km of carbon dioxide.

Next up in the petrol range is the 430i which will hit 155mph flat out and get to 62mph from a standing start in 5.8 seconds. This additional performance does impact economy and emissions, though, with 46.3-49.6mpg and 131-141g/km being claimed.

Sitting atop the petrol lineup is the M440i xDrive, which has the same 155mph top speed as the model below it but a seriously speedy 0 to 62mph time of 4.5 seconds. A time like this is rapid enough to outpace most cars on UK roads. Again though, the additional performance comes with a fuel consumption and emissions-based sacrifice - exacerbated by the addition of a heavy all-wheel drive system. BMW is claiming 39.8-41.5mpg and 155-163g/km.

Moving over to the diesel options, the entry-level model (the 420d) is available with two- or four-wheel-drive, though opting for the latter reduces performance a tad and reduces fuel economy. Two-wheel-drive models will do 0 to 62mph in 7.4 seconds and top out at 149mph. xDrive 420d models, meanwhile, take 0.3 seconds longer to get from 0 to 62mph and hit 148mph flat out.

Economy and emissions figures for the two-wheel-drive 420d stand at 67.3-72.4mpg (specification and wheel dependent) and 103-112g/km. Meanwhile, the four-wheel-drive model makes do with 61.4-65.7mpg and 112-121g/km.

Rounding off the diesels are the larger engines expected in spring 2021. BMW has only released provisional economy and emissions figures for these, with the 430d xDrive sitting at 45.6mpg and 146g/km and the M440d at 42.2mpg and 158g/km.

Both of these diesels are quick, with the 430d expected to go from 0 to 62mph in 5.2 seconds and the M440d 4.7 seconds. Both models will hit 155mph flat out. For those wondering why some figures are quoted as ranges, this is due to the impact certain optional extras have on the economy figures, such as specifying larger alloy wheels. Larger wheels are normally heavier and thus require more energy to be turned, thus having a negative impact on fuel economy and emissions.

2020 BMW 4 Series Coupe rivals and alternatives

The upmarket medium coupe market where the 4 Series sits has for a long time been dominated by German cars - and it still is. Proof in the pudding is the fact that the 4 Series’ biggest rivals are the Mercedes C-Class Coupe and the Audi A5 Coupe. Audi’s A5 is competent and offers a high quality interior, but isn't too exciting - not that this should put you off if you're not after the sportiest drive. That aside, the A5 is well built, a comfortable long-distance cruiser and available with a range of impressive engines.

The Mercedes C-Class is more in tune with the BMW 4 Series in terms of feel. The styling of the C-Class coupe is definitely more classy than flamboyant (but that is often the Mercedes way) and inside is a stylish cabin - though the Audi is far sturdier. As for criticisms, standard equipment is a touch sparse, the diesel engines aren’t as quiet as rivals and the steering doesn't offer the best feedback around corners.

If the styling of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe appeals to you, though, it's definitely worth considering against both Audi and Mercedes. On the other hand, if you hate the looks of the latest model, there are surprisingly good value deals on the outgoing 4 Series - whether you're after a low-mileage nearly-new model or an older and cheaper car.
