Electric car home charging point grant

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) grant is no longer open to new applicants. Here's everything about how it worked

Unless you have somewhere to charge up at home or can regularly recharge at work, owning an electric car or even a plug-in hybrid car can be quite tricky. Even if you are lucky to have a public charging point nearby, there's no guarantee that it will be available - or even working.

It is possible to charge most electric and hybrid cars from a three-pin plug, but it is not advisable - not least because the low 2.3kW power from such a socket means that you can be waiting an awful long time for an empty battery to charge fully. Cars with big batteries can take over 24 hours to recharge from a normal household socket. Using extension leads is a no-go, too, because it could lead to overheating and fires.

This is why buyers of new and used electric cars were eligible for a grant (called the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, or EVHS) to fit a charging point at their home. These devices allow you to charge a car up three times faster than a conventional plug, and can usually be installed without much fuss.

The EVHS grant, otherwise referred to as the OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grant, paid up to 75% of the cost of the purchase and installation of a home charging point, up to a maximum of £350, though the limit was previously higher at £500. This was on top of the plug-in car grant, which currently discounts the price of an electric vehicle by up to £1,500.

A new EV Chargepoint grant has since been launched, which replaces the EVHS grant. Only homeowners who live in flat and people in rental accommodation are eligible for this new grant, which is also capped at 75% of the purchase and installation cost of a charging point, up to £350.

How to claim the EV Chargepoint grant

In order to claim up to £350, there are first a few stipulations you need to adhere to:

  • Only one grant can be claimed per car, which means moving house is not covered
  • The customer’s property must have designated, private off-street parking
  • The charging point must be on the government's approved list at the time of installation
  • The vehicle linked to the grant should be on the government's approved list, which includes cars, vans, taxis and motorcycles
  • A leased vehicle should be for at least 6 months

Electric car charging point grant: the costs

The cost of each charging point varies from supplier to supplier. As an example, a tethered 7kW 'Pod Point Solo' charger would cost £949, or £599 if you're eligible for the grant. An untethered 7kW 'BP Pulse Homecharger 7' costs £699, or £1,049 prior to the grant.

Electric car charging point grant in Scotland

The grant is slightly different in Scotland. The £350 towards the cost is still available, however, there is an additional £250 further funding that can be claimed from the Energy Saving Trust (or £350 for those living in remote parts of Scotland).

You will pay for the costs, minus the £350 OLEV grant, then the Energy Saving Trust will reimburse you up to £350 after the installation.
