HISTORY OF MASERATI CARS

The Italian luxury car manufacturer, Maserati, was established on December 1, 1914 in Bologna by the Maserati brothers, Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto who were all involved with automobiles from the beginning of the 20th century. Initially Maserati built race cars and established its name as a formidable competitor.

By 1937, the Maserati brothers had sold their shares in the company to the Adolfo Orsi family, who in 1940 relocated the company headquarters to their hometown of Modena, where it remains to this day.

The famous Argentinean driver, Juan-Manuel Fangio raced for Maserati for a number of years in the 1950s, producing a series of stunning victories including winning the world championship in 1957 in the Maserati 250F. After 1957, however, Maserati became more and more focused on road cars.

During the 1960s and 1970s the ownership of the company changed hands a number of times. First Citroen bought the company in 1968 and then sold it to Alessandro de Tomaso, an Argentinean former racing driver in 1975. Chrysler then took a stake in the company but by 1993 Fiat bought Maserati outright. 1997 saw Ferrari, a Fiat subsidiary, take a 50% stake in Maserati and by 1999 the famous sports car company owned Maserati outright making it their luxury division within the Ferrari company.

Ferrari built a new Maserati factory and is credited with bringing it back from the brink of bankruptcy after many lack-lustre years. Today Maserati is once again a force in the premium luxury sports car market with a range of exciting and intoxicating models.

Inside the Fiat Group, Maserati has moved on again and has more recently become part of its sports car group which includes Alfa Romeo.
